Awful Purdies is a Folk-Americana collective of five multi-instrumental women who, for nearly two decades, have been weaving stories, harmonies, and humor into the fabric of the Midwest music scene. Powered by seamless vocals and a mix of banjo, accordion, cello, guitar, mandolin, bass, and percussion, the Purdies create a sound that’s both lush and down-to-earth — an earnest nod to folk, old country, bluegrass, honky tonk, and soul.
On stage, Awful Purdies take turns stepping forward as lead singer and songwriter, creating a shared musical conversation that brings connection, energy, and a touch of mischief. Their live shows blend heart, harmony, and humor — moments of intimacy and insight wrapped in gratitude and friendship.
Since forming in 2006, the Purdies have been raising families, telling women’s stories, advocating for human rights, and strengthening the creative fabric of Eastern Iowa. As they celebrate their 20th anniversary in 2026, they’re releasing 20 singles — collectively forming their fifth studio album — a love letter to where they’ve been and an invitation to where they’re going next.
From front porches, theaters, and stages, including Blue Ox, Sugar Maple, and Iowa Arts Festival, Hancher Auditorium, and The Englert Theatre, among others, Awful Purdies have appeared with artists including Dom Flemons (Carolina Chocolate Drops), Pert Near Sandstone, Taylor Mac, William Elliott Whitmore, Deb Talan, Big Richard, and more.
