Chuck Prophet & the Mission Express, Ismay - SOLD OUT

Chuck Prophet & the Mission Express

Doors 7:00PM / Show 8:00PM

$30

Chuck Prophet will release The Land That Time Forgot, his new album out on Yep Roc Records. Most of the record's dozen songs were co written by Prophet and klipschutz, his longtime collaborator. Together, they recall the melancholy wonder of their native Bay Area, a land that, to the acclaimed songwriters, represents the hope and despair that makes rock 'n'roll so timeless, even if it's now full of robots with ironic haircuts. It's a darker, more present take on Americana and all its beautiful losers.

Priced out of his home turf, Prophet recorded the album with producer Kenny Siegal (Langhorne Slim, Amanda Palmer, The New Pornographers) on the New York Vermont border, where he could look upon his hometown with fresh distance. With a new drive and new hooks, he orients himself around an array of locations real and imagined including SF's Tenderloin District, an English roundabout, and Nixonland while hanging out with a love struck mirror and the ghosts of Johnny Thunders, Willie Wonka, and John the Baptist, and contemplating the train that carried Abraham Lincoln home for the final time. It's everything you'd expect from a Chuck Prophet record and more.

Ismay

Ismay’s songwriting connects deeply to the land. Melding the experience of taming wild horses, escaping wildfires, and birthing lambs with the mystical soundscape that nature inspires, Ismay has sharpened their musical craft over the last decade while living and working on their family ranch in Northern California. With Songs of Sonoma Mountain, their debut full length album recorded in the family barn and released in 2020, Ismay realized a contemplative vision blending field recordings and intricate melodies with live, inventive composition. In the wake of Songs of Sonoma Mountain, Ismay has developed the sound further, letting their singular melodies breathe, interact, and come to fruition through a full band groove with psychedelic color in upcoming releases. Ismay represents the collaborative work driven by singer-songwriter Avery Hellman, who grew up backstage at their grandfather’s Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, where they were inspired early on by artists such as Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch, and Hazel Dickens.

Ismay was formed in 2015, and performs as both a solo artist, duo, and a full band, with a combination of electric fingerpicking guitar drums, bass, cello, and violin. Ismay has appeared throughout the West Coast at music festivals such as Hardly Strictly Bluegrass 2016 and Strawberry Music Festival 2017; Cowboy Poetry Gathering 2021, and at renowned venues such as the Great American Music Hall, Slim’s, the Golden State Theater, and the Mystic Theater, and as an opening act for acclaimed artists including Steve Earle, Watchhouse (fka Mandolin Orange), Justin Townes Earle, Robert Earl Keen, John Doe, and Chuck Prophet. Ismay is based in the rural area outside of Petaluma, California, was born in Hong Kong, and was raised in San Francisco & Marin County California.
