Freedy Johnston is a midwestern born troubadour who made his way to NYC amid the early 90’s alternative rock boom. After two albums with Bar None he was signed by Elektra Records where he released his 1994 breakout album This Perfect World. Produced by Butch Vig, the album featured the radio hit “Bad Reputation”, which reached 54 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and earned him Rolling Stone's Songwriter of the Year award. Other publications, including The New York Times, Spin Magazine, and Musician Magazine, gave the album high marks as well. Johnston's songs appear on the soundtracks for acclaimed films Kingpin, Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead, and Kicking and Screaming.
Post 90’s era projects include three more albums for Elektra, collaborations with T-Bone Burnett, Susan Cowsill, Jon Dee Graham and as a member of occasional Madison WI based live cover band the Know-it-All Boyfriends, which also includes fellow musicians Jay Moran, James "Pie" Cowan, Duke Erikson, and Butch Vig.
After a long hiatus and a forced downtime pandemic, Johnston dove into writing and recording his first album in seven years Back On The Road To You, out September 9th on Forty Below Records. Special guest appearances by Aimee Mann, Susanna Hoffs, Susan Cowsill, along with an all-star roots music band, including Doug Pettibone (Lucinda Williams), Dusty Wakeman (Jim Lauderdale), Dave Raven (Shelby Lynn) and Sasha Smith (Priscilla Ahn).
