Mickey Sunshine
Mickey Sunshine is the hottest post-grunge rock band coming out of Madison, WI — and they’re selling out. Big time.
With lyrics that are brash and bold, the songs explore inequality women have historically faced for being brazenly sexual in a culture that glorifies men for the same behavior. Bandleader Andrea Gonzales-Paul draws inspiration from Hole, Liz Phair, Kim Gordon, Alanis Morissette and The Pixies. The band consists of noted Madison drummer Chris Di Bernardo, who is engaged to the frontwoman, guitarist Skylar Nahn, and bassist Shelby Len.
The group became known for shows audiences have described as both sexy and scary. After only a short time in the scene, they were dubbed Mickey Tavern’s unofficial house band.
Mickey Sunshine will be releasing music in 2023, recorded by DISQ’s Logan Severson and Third Man Records’ Cam Frank.
Howler
In the 1990s, Wendy Schneider fronted Bugatti Type 35, a Madison post-punk band that was active until the early 2000s. She’ll be returning to The Bur Oak with her band, Howler.
Featuring Schneider on guitar and vocals and Joe Bernstein (The Kissers, Cribshitter) on drums, Howler picks up where Bugatti Type 35 left off — the music is dark and driving with a lo-fi edge.
Jane Hobson
Jane Hobson is a singer-songwriter from Madison, Wisconsin. She recently graduated from Oberlin College, where she studied English, and played in a rock band, The Hobgoblins. Jane grew up playing music with her father, the drummer of the pioneering grunge band, Killdozer, and still enjoys jamming alongside him.
Jane released her first solo album, “Early College,” in 2021. This year, she has released two singles, “Out Loud” and “If You Ask.” She produced music videos for the tracks “Talk Back to Me,” Out Loud,” and “If You Ask,” which are available for streaming on YouTube.
Jane now plays live shows with the support an of amazing group of musicians: Pat Granzen (drums), James Strelow (lead guitar), and Ivan Skryagin (bass). You may have seen them perform at the Orton Park Festival, The Rigby, The Bur Oak, BarleyPop Live, or Mickey’s Tavern.
